39+1 represents 39 Days working for change in our community and city.

Staring on Monday 19 February for 39 Days leading to 1 Special Day – Good Friday.

Notwithstanding all the good work already undertaken by so many, 39+1 is calling on all main contributors within our communities to do something positive to support and encourage positive change during these 39+1 days. We are calling on churches, politicians, community organizations, the PSNI, Paramilitary Groups, and Drug Dealers to facilitate, promote and support only positive activities during these days.

39+1 is about encouraging positive change to the creation of positive community life and appeals to the following groups to help in this process:

CHURCHES

A 40 Day Cross Walk – Churches are invited to join with us as we lift up the Cross throughout the City of Belfast with Cross Walks and Cross Vigils as follows: Beginning at 12 noon each day, one person will walk with a 7ft Cross along the centre of the road starting at New Life City Church, along the Falls Road, Springfield Road, Lanark Way, Shankill Road, Northumberland St, and back to New Life City Church. Others will walk alongside, but on the pavement handing out literature and chatting with people in passing.

Cross-Vigils – Small groups of people will stand with a 7ft Cross at various interface areas, e.g. The Dividing Gates in Northumberland Street, Lanark Way, and between Twaddell Avenue and Ardoyne. Passers-by can sign their names on the crosses if they wish, and can receive prayer for specific needs.

The purpose of the Cross Walk and the Cross Vigils is to lift the cross as a symbol of peace that’s respected by both communities living either side of the Dividing Wall.

Prayer Tent – This will be erected between the Dividing Gates in Northumberland Street. Volunteers will be present everyday for three hours, from 12 noon to 3 pm, to pray for anyone who stops by or calls in for prayer. There will be a Phone Hotline – a mobile phone to receive prayer requests by call or text.

Special 39+1 Events – Churches are invited to put on an event during these 40 days that will promote and support 39+1. This could be a Special Prayer Event, either by the local church or alongside other churches, or a Worship Event, a Bible Reading event, or anything creative.
